Top 5 Men’s Fashion Mistakes

freshneck-spring13-shoot-imageDid you ever have one of those moments where you felt like the coolest cat in town; then you looked back and realized you really weren’t? As men we often mistake what’s in style for what isn’t. We’re notorious for pulling fashion faux pas everywhere we go. Well, if you’re looking to update your look in a stylish manner, this is your source. Below we’re going to cover the top 5 major fashion mistakes you’re going to want to steer clear of.

  1. Oversized Suits – Most guys are wearing sizes that look too big for them. It isn’t appealing and must be avoided. Often, oversized clothes make the wearer look small and sloppy. Instead look for fitted suits that provide a slimming appearance.
  2. Bad Trouser Breaks – There is nothing more unappealing that having your trousers pool around your shoes. Your best bet is to find a local tailor and have them cuff your trousers to size. Ideally there should be only a slight break around the ankle.
  3. Square Toe Shoes – Stick to round toed shoes. The square toed era is long gone. I mean our feet aren’t square, why should our shoes be?
  4. Un-tucked Office Shirts – While huge in the college scene, this look is by far unappealing. All the un-tucked shirt communicates is that you don’t know how to dress yourself, or you simply don’t care.
  5. Wallet Diet – Many ignore the style of a wallet. There’s nothing worse than seeing a well-dressed man with a wallet bulging in his pocket. There’s no need to carry all your receipts, coupons, and business cards everywhere you go. Rather, invest in a slim wallet or card holder that will hold a bit of cash, some cards, and an ID.

Traveling Ties

When it comes to traveling, packing clothes is often a chore many fear. You want to make sure you pack your clothes cleanly and efficiently. One of the most awkward articles of clothing to pack is the tie. Ties are expensive, so obviously you would want protect them from zipper snags, stains, or worse, the TSA. After doing quite a bit of research, three methods seemed to be most effective.

tie-case-700

Brown Leather Tie Case by Moore & Giles

The first is a tie carrier. Think of a portfolio for your ties. This small case safely stores your ties and protects them from any other items in your bag that could cause damage. Some claim the case causes mild creases, but that’s nothing a quick steaming can’t solve.

The second method is quite a bit cheaper and just as effective. Rolling up your ties and storing them in an airtight Ziploc bag works especially well with thicker, wool knit ties. While it might not be as stylish as a tie carrier it will definitely get the job done.

The last method may very well be your best bet. You only need to pack ties if you own them. And, to be honest owning ties is expensive and over-rated. With FreshNeck, you can rent all the ties you want and keep them as long as you want. However, what happens when you need to travel with your ties? FreshNeck has you covered there as well. FreshNeck will provide shipping services to any hotel you plan on checking into. With just a few online clicks, your ties will be waiting for you in your room when you arrive. Visit FreshNeck.com today and start traveling smarter.

Dapper Eye for the Small Guy

ShortMan_Inset

If you are a short and skinny guy you’ve probably often faced some frustration when dressing up. Simply put, most suits and ties do not necessarily flatter your physiques. You have to be carefully deciding which fitted shirts, ties, and sports jackets will best help pull off that dapper style you’re shooting for. Many small statured guys face that dilemma as well, therefore we figured some of these tips bellow should definitely help out.

  1. The one button jacket is your friend – A one button jacket allows for a larger “V” shape along the lapels. This in turn lengthens your torso and overall physique.
  2. Shorter jackets lengthen the legs – A short jacket ending just at the bottom of the seat lengthens the leg line visually. This in turn creates the illusion of being tall.
  3. The peak lapel – a peak lapel draws attention upward towards the wearer’s chest and shoulders, creating a broader perspective. Be sure to stick to thinner lapels if you have a small frame).
  4. Show some shirt cuff – You can have your jacket sleeves cut to show a bit of your shirt cuff. Anywhere from a half inch to an inch is ideal. Add a stylish set of cufflinks from our collection to properly accessorize. See our full collection of cufflinks here.
  5. Lastly and most importantly, is the tie. A tie can make or break a short, skinny guy’s look. With so many styles available it can be difficult to choose the appropriate one. Here the skinny or slim tie will pull off your look best. If you’re thin and wearing a slim-fit shirt, a skinny or slim tie will accent your appearance. The thinness of the tie will promote a slender and taller perspective without sacrificing broadness in the shoulders and chest. For example take a look at the slimming Gucci, wool and silk blend, 2.75 inch slim tie or the Duchamp silk knit skinny tie.

How to Tie a Bow Tie with FreshNeck CEO David Goldberg

Some people may think bow ties are an old-fashion accessory, but at Freshneck, we beg to differ. No longer. With the help of Business Insider, we put together a “How To” video that will have you doing your best Swizz Beatz impression in no time. Featuring FreshNeck founder David Goldberg.

Once you master the art of tying a bow tie, you will want to get your hands on as many bows as possible.  Fortunately, at FreshNeck we carry over 160 different styles, from designers including Giorgio Armani, Breuer, Alexander Olch, Brooks Bros, Ted Baker, Everett, and Ivy Prepster . Looking Fly in a Skinny Tie

Seaward & Stearn Skinny Tie

Seaward & Stern Skinny Tie

As often happens in the fashion industry, trends come, go and come again. This season, skinny ties are in for men’s fashion. Originally popularized in the late 60’s, skinny ties have made a sleek and modern comeback in men’s fashion. It’s also an ideal way to achieve that #newcasual look. Incorporating a skinny tie into your every-day wardrobe will have you turning heads. For those of you new to skinny ties, fear not, below are some tips on how to pull off the look.

A skinny tie often ranges anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide and the traditional 57 inches long. Given those dimensions, you want your outfit to have a slim look. Often it is best to wear a fitted dress shirt of a solid color or a solid skinny tie on a patterned shirt. Also be sure that your jacket lapels are not too much wider than your tie.

Every element of your attire should be in proportion. Given that bit of information, skinny ties aren’t for everyone. If you are a man with a stockier build, the skinny tie look may not be your style. Similarly, you will also want to avoid large, boxy suit and sports jackets. For a #newcasual look, do not tie your skinny tie all the way to the top, leaving it a bit loose gives off a modern, hip look that goes great with a nice pair of slim jeans.

As far as tie length goes, you want to avoid having your tie fall too far above or below your belt. Generally your tie should fall no more than 1 inch below or 3 inches above your belt line. Tying your skinny tie is a no-brainer as well. You want to stick to a slim knot generally. A popular knot for skinny ties is known as the “four-in-hand” knot. Lastly, don’t forget the tie bar! Nothing screams class more than a skinny tie paired with a nice, shiny, tie bar. Just remember your tie bar should never be wider than your tie. We’ve got some great tie bar’s that you can check out by DiBi.

Best of all, with FreshNeck you can play the skinny trend and exchange your ties for something new when they’re no longer “in”.

Style Survival Guide: The Heatwave

heat-wave-style-guide-freshneck

When the temperatures soar into the 90’s, us guys are screwed. While the ladies have it easy, in their summer dresses and tanks (we don’t mind), we suffer the heat with our long sleeves and pants. Knotting a tie and adding a blazer/jacket only makes matters worse.  Throw in a crowded subway ride and you have a recipe for disaster.  Nobody wants to be the guy showing up to the office covered in sweat.

With August near, the hot and humid days are only getting worse. Here are a few tips to keep you feeling cool, without sacrificing style.

FABRIC

While your wool blend may get you through three seasons, cotton and linen rule the day for summer suits. They are the perfect lightweight summer fabrics with a bonus – it draws attention to your shoulders to highlight those long hours at the gym. However, keep in mind linen’s tendency to wrinkle. J. Crew and Bonobos both offer reasonable options in a variety of colors.

As for summer shirts, our favorite fabrics are poplin, zephyr, and linen. For a detailed discussion of summer shirting fabrics, check out our friends over at Alenford.

picstitch

And of course, we can’t leave out the accessories. A good rule of thumb is to match the material of your tie to your blazer. While Fashion 101 will tell you not to wear your thick wool tie, you’d be surprised at how much heat a standard silk tie can generate, especially if knotted tightly.  Instead, go with a lightweight slim cotton or linen (or derivatives like chambray and seersucker). One of the great benefits of being a member of FreshNeck is that you can properly play the seasons, without purchasing the items.  Get some fresh summer ties and pocket squares for the summer, and exchange them out for more traditional fabrics as fall rolls around.

Some brands to check out that specialize in lightweight fabrics: DiBi, Armstrong & Wilson, Breuer, and Everett.

COLOR

Dark colors trap the heat, while light colors let it pass through. Our favorite is a basic khaki suit. Versatile enough to dress up or down, lightweight chino fabric ensures nobody will see sweat. If you want to keep it formal, pair it with a white shirt and black tie, but we suggest bringing it casual with a pop of color. A trending alternative is the light gray suit, in cotton or linen.

FIT

We are all for a tailored look, but summer suits should be cut slightly bigger to allow room to breathe.  Nobody wants to see that suit stuck to your inner thigh.  And you’ll be less inclined to sweat through the material.

FOOTWEAR

Let’s stick with the same themes here.  Keep it light, both in weight, and in color.  Some caramel or light gray colored loafers work well.

And no need for socks.  You’d be amazed at how much letting your ankles breathe can do for the rest of your body.  If you tend to sweat from your feet (or get blisters) from going sockless, consider a loafer liner, which is basically just the bottom of a sock.  Hook & Albert makes some a great one in funky colors.

Sockless Loafers in Summer Still feeling helpless? If you tend to sweat like Patrick Ewing after 48 minutes against the Bulls, its handy to keep a second shirt (and some deodorant) at the office. Last resort? Keep your suit at the office and commute in gym shorts and sneakers – just make sure you get to work before your boss!

“AND THEY’RE OFF”

Everyone loves the Kentucky Derby. Sporting Event? Check. Flowing Booze (Mint Juleps, anyone?). Check. Gambling. Check.

But as you’ve come to expect from us by now, we like to take things to another level. Sure, you can mosey on down to your local watering hole at 6:22 pm just in time to catch some 70-year-old announcer yell “AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME.” But while the actual race everyone cares about is only 2 minutes long, we prefer to participate in a daylong spectacle of the 3D’s 1) Dancing 2) Drinking, and 3) Dressing Up . Yeah that’s right. No Derby Party is complete without full-on, Derby-Inspired costumes. In fact, FreshNeck has gotten together with of New York City’s hippest and most dapper companies (Everett Clothing, Suspender Boys, Electric Gentlemen, and others) to throw an all day DerbyStyle shindig at the Ava Lounge at the Dream Midtown Hotel. Tickets can be bought here, and include a drink ticket, and automatic entry to a raffle chock full of great prizes.  As if this wasn’t enough, we will also be hosting a cash-prize costume contest, and there will be a real-live horse greeting you at the door.

But we realize many of you won’t be in New York City to attend, and will be going to other Derby-themed parties.  No matter where you’re downing your juleps, we strongly encourage you to do so in style, literally. So we’ve put together some quick tips for the gent looking to get his Southern Charm on. Bonus points for buying as little as possible, and using what you have. Double bonus points for renting your accessories at FreshNeck.com.

1. Seersucker – There is an old saying that “Only rich men can afford such a cheap fabric.” You can go traditional with a full-on seersucker suit or blazer like this Bonobos edition, or go modern with seersucker accessories.

2. Color – The bolder and brighter the better. There’s no wrong place for it: your shirt (think pastel!), pants, socks, bow tie, even your shoe laces.

3. Hats – Leave them for the ladies!

4. Be comfortable! The beauty of #DerbyStyle is you can dress up, and still be cool and comfortable. It’s all about breathable fabrics (seersucker, cotton, linen), whether in the Kentucky sun  or a sweaty NYC bar.

Now, if you just can’t get yourself to go all-in on this, and you’re looking to participate in a conservative way, perhaps you can go with a conservative, derby-themed accessory.  Here’s a favorite from our Collection:
