7 Things To Know Before You Knot Up

FN_7ThingsToKnowNewsLetter

You’re probably not a morning person (is there really such a thing?). You might be thinking about that upcoming meeting, afterwork date, or at a minimum, that first double shot of expresso. You don’t want to exert too much brain power on putting together the flawless outfit, but the way you dress will affect your attitude and performance for the entire day. So we’re here to give you 7 simple rules  that will have you looking sharp every day, with minimal effort in the new year.

1. Keep It Proportional.

This one is pretty simple, yet often overlooked. Your jacket lapels, shirt collar, and tie should all be similar in size/width. Nothing looks more clownish than a fat windsor knot overpowering a skinny H&M collar. Many of the modern suits are being cut slimmer, so adjust accordingly.

(Our friends at Arden Reed have a great write-up on matching your collar to your tie knot. Check it out.)

2. Length Matters.

Tie length

Your tie should just touch the top of your belt. Skinny Ties can be a tad shorter (again, it’s that whole proportion thing).

3. Everyone Loves a Good Dimple.

A tie dimple says “this guy know’s what he’s doing.”  Perhaps nobody was more iconic for their tie dimple than Cary Grant. TSBMen (The Style Blogger) shows you how to nail it every time.

4. Setting The Bar.

tiebar-featured-664Few things to know about tie bars. First, purpose. The bar not only holds the two pieces of your tie together, but also fastens them both to the shirt’s placket, keeping your tie from getting unruly.  Second, how to wear it. Your tie bar should never be wider than your tie (three-quarters is a safe generalization), and though there are some differing opinions on the matter, ours is that the tie bar should be placed right below the third button of your shirt. It should still be visible with a vest or buttoned blazer.

5. The Combo.

While there are endless parts of a man’s outfit that sums to the whole, the colors and patterns of the shirt/tie combo make it the center of attention. We’ve previously shown you the intricacies of pairing the solid and striped shirts with your ties (more pattern tutorials to come!), but the simplest rule of all will avoid epic fails: between your shirt and your tie, one should be simple/muted, and the other bold.

6. Play The Seasons.

rough-neck-wool-ties-gq-magazine-september-2013-fashion-04In the B.F. days (Before FreshNeck), it was a daunting task to amass a tie arsenal that allowed you to find the perfect tie for any conceivable occasion. Only Jay Gatsby’s closet would carry a full selection of light cottons and linens for summer, and wools and cashmeres for winter, in addition to the all-season silks. But now with over 1000 unique ties at your disposal, you have no excuse. So embrace the seasons. A quick tip: match your tie fabric to your suit fabric.

7. Nobody Likes a Sloppy Collar.

Get yourself some good collar stays. We’re not talking those flimsy plastic ones. Go brass, or treat yourself to some nice engraved sterling silver ones.  A non-stiff collar can ruin an otherwise refined outfit with one swift blow. Sign up for a FreshNeck trial now and we’ll get you started with a dope pair of brass collar stays.

Fresh Weddings!

groomsmen 2

We can think of no more fitting occasion to get “dressed to the nines” and pay attention to clothing choices than a wedding.  Whether you’re attending as a groomsman, a regular guest, or if this is your special day, just grabbing the first thing in your closet just won’t do.

At FreshNeck, we’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of many of these unforgettable days.  We’ve outfitted grooms, groomsmen, fathers of the brides/grooms, and some very stylish wedding crashers! With FreshNeck, it is now simple and affordable to wear something unique for that one day.  No longer do you have to recycle that solid black bow tie for every single wedding.

How We Can Help

Let’s face it.  Wedding expenses get out of hand quickly, so there is no need to spend an extra grand outfitting yourself and your groomsmen with ties they will likely wear once.  And the old “giving the tie as a groomsmen gift” is a waste of money, and is rarely appreciated by the recipient.  The solution – Rent accessories for the day, and buy them groomsmen gifts with some sentiment attached.

– 1-time rentals on unique formal accessories from designers including Brioni, Vitaliano Pancaldi, Prada, Gucci, and more. Whether you are looking for a tie, bow tie, pocket square, cufflinks, or an entire set, we got you covered.

– Groomsmen packages.  We carry up to 12 units of many of our styles, to outfit your entire  wedding party.

– Custom packages.  Let us know what you’re looking for, in terms of style, type, and color.  You can even provide a picture of your bride-to-be’s color palette, and we can work with our vendors to create something just for you. If we don’t already have it, we’ll get it.

– Discounts with affiliates, including custom tuxedos and shirts.

Our Work

We recently had the honor of being a part of Bonnie and Kevin Boon’s special day at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.  Bonnie had chosen a beautiful teal for her bridesmaids’ dresses, and Kevin was looking for something affordable for his 8 groomsmen that would match, and he preferred a skinnier width of tie. FreshNeck worked with one of its vendors, Imani Uomo, to achieve this look, and we added solid white cotton pocket squares to finish it off.  The gentlemen looked dapper, but I think we can all agree the greatest accessory is a beautiful bride like Bonnie.  Check out some of the pictures:

Designer of the Month: VJNY

In 2006, out of his New Jersey apartment, Jesse Chao launched VITTORIO J.  Six years later the President of the United States was wearing his designs.  At FreshNeck we carry Vittorio J’s VJNY collection (and love it) which focuses on slim neck-wear inspired by “New York City’s unique cultural soufflé.”  We talked to Jesse Chao about his background, his inspirations and what’s next for VITTORIO J.

Jesse graduated from Montclair State University with a major in marketing and finance and no traditional fashion experience to speak of.  It was in college where he started dreaming of designing, he had always had great style, but didn’t know where to start.  So he studied one of the greats – Ralph Lauren – who also started in neckties.  Considering he was in college and money was tight, Jesse took a cue from Ralph Lauren and started designing ties which were relatively inexpensive to design and manufacture.

Nothing quite captures the essence of VJNY like the King Skull moniker.  It was inspired by Jesse’s love of the skull and cross-n-bones pattern, with a twist, the added crown symbolizes the ROYALITY of the design, which is part of the VITTORIO J mantra, “CLASSIC. ROYAL. GOODS”.  Living in the city Jesse calls, “the fashion epicenter of the universe,” he often draws his inspirations from the scenes of New York , including tattoos, street wear, and the flags of different countries hanging in multicultural streets of New York City.  His favorite tie of the VJNY collection is The Filipino Flag inspired tie which represents his own ethnicity.  Jesse stresses three keys in making a great tie, “Craftsmanship, Design and what [he] calls the ‘Wow’ factor.”  And believe us, he delivers.

We asked Jesse what makes a good tie so important.  He gave us a great answer, “it’s the quintessential accessory for a man, it reflects your personality.”  Well if that’s true his ties reflect some of the strongest personalities in the world.  Whether it’s men’s style icon Pharrell, basketball legend Magic Johnson or the most powerful man in the free world Barack Obama wearing his designs, it’s safe to say he’s ties reflect well.

With momentum on his side, Jesse looks to expand into different accessories, including bowties, pocket squares and scarves (you can bet we’ll be carrying those as soon as they come out).  He also hinted at “some really great collaborations coming for Spring/Summer 2013 with other elite NYC designers.”  Although he wouldn’t tip his hand on who he plans to collaborate with, we’re definitely excited for the possibilities.

We ended talking about the future of menswear.  Jesse commented, “People are becoming so much more receptive to new thinking in shopping and spending, because it gives the consumer a lot of options and possibilities at moment’s notice, which I think is cool… So naturally, aligning VJNY with FreshNeck is a great opportunity for my brand.”  The feeling is mutual; we love carrying the VJNY collection and love the feedback we’re getting on it.  Its brands like this, with interesting back stories and great designs, we think our customers can really get behind.
