But we know there is more to life than ties, so allow us to help you find something that your dad/husband will find hip, practical, and a little bit fun too.

For Father Time

For the Father Who Enjoys the Finer Things

Harry’s Father & Son Shave Set ($30)

fathers-day-set-1-9e887339375d0373cd4590426833c116One real razor for dad, one toy one for your man-in-training. Engraving options available for additional $15.

Woodinville Whiskey Kit ($149.99)

setThe magic that happens inside of a whiskey barrel has always intrigued the true whiskey drinker. But unless you own your own distillery (we strongly recommend this by the way), it’s next to impossible to witness the transformation of the distillate from clear to brown, and the many flavor, aroma, and taste complexities that are added before finishing the journey as aged whiskey. Woodinville’s “Age Your Own” kit puts you in the Captain’s seat for aging your whiskey to perfection. Patience not included.

For the Discovering Father

Bespoke Post “Box of Awesome” ($45/each with membership)

1524923_634314866631129_704230608_n

Each month they search the world over for new brands and products that are interesting, hard to find, or simply remarkable. It starts with a story. Each month, they develop a theme that will help broaden your horizons. They track down stand-out products from around the world or custom-design their own. Everything gets put to the test with hands-on trials until they’re sure they’ve got the best of the best. They call on the pros – mixologists, designers, and more – to help you get the most out of your box.

Parrot AR. Drone 2.0 ($300)

parrotardrone2_526273

Thought drones were only for the government, Amazon, and the crazy terrorist on “24”? There are actually quite a few on the market, ranging in price, but the Parrot AR. Drone 2.0 is our choice for it’s features and affordable price. It boasts an improved control system, a built-in camera capable of capturing 720HD video, and the ability to create its own wi-fi network.

StyleBowl XLVIII

The big game is this Sunday, and it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top (though Floyd Mayweather is betting $10 Million on the Broncos). We’re not quite ready for such a wager, so we’ll just sit back, pound some wings and beer (upgrade to Scotch at halftime?), and enjoy the game.

This game, however, does offer some interesting personalities: Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch, even Seattle Coach Pete Carroll.  The question were asking today: which team has more style?

DENVER BRONCOS:

QB Peyton Manning

QB Peyton Manning keeps it classic and cool.

RB Ronnie Hillman doesn't get much playing time in real life, but he's a star in this matchup with that bow tie and chain.

WINNER – The Denver Broncos – The ‘hawks came out looking good early, with Russell Wilson really giving it everything he’s got, but the rest of the squad just couldn’t contribute much. Denver used a well rounded attach to come out on top of this style matchup.

FreshNeck on the Today Show!

We’ve received our fare share of good press lately, but perhaps none more exciting that being featuring on The Today Show!

TodayShow2 TodayShow1

The segment was titled “Over the Top, Under $100″, and featured some great affordable gifts.

Calling FreshNeck the “Netflix for Ties,” they said it’s the perfect gift for the “Dapper Dude in Your Life.” We couldn’t agree more.

Gift Guide for the Dapper Gent

Holiday Gift Guide

It’s Holiday Season. Which means you need to empty your wallet and buy some gifts for a bunch of people, all some of whom mean a lot to you. The key to a good gift is making it personal (aka, don’t give a tech gadget to your grandfather who still uses a fax machine).

There are tons of great gift guides out there, but we’re going to focus on a certain type of individual, the Dapper Gentleman. Whether this is you, your husband/boyfriend, son, or pop-pop, we’re hoping to give you some ideas that are a bit more original than what you’re used to. The problem with buying a gift for the DG? As a man of fine taste, he typically already owns most of what he wants. So the key is, get him something he may not know even exists! And if you’re a reader of this blog, it should go without saying: DON’T BUY HIM A TIE. A 3-month gift membership to FreshNeck will only run you $60, and he won’t resent you at every family affair when he feels forced to wear that same cheesy tie.

So without further ado, here are some of our picks for 2013 at different price points.

1. A Shave Kit from Harry’s (www.harrys.com) – $15+

Harrys Truman Set

Brought to you by members of the Warby Parker team, Harry’s is a modern shaving line built upon quality craftsmanship and simple design (sound familiar?).  Skipping the middle man (Duane Reade) gives them the ability to charge affordable prices, as their two sets (handle, 3 blades, cream), The Truman and The Winston, come in at $15 and $25, respectively.

If the man in your life lives in New York City, splurge for a gift card to Harry’s Corner Shop, a modern-day barber shop on MacDougal Street. A straight razor shave plus a haircut will run $60.

2. Caskers Whiskey Club (www.caskers.com) – $179.99+

Caskers

Dapper gentlemen enjoy a good cocktail, but store-bought vodka just doesn’t pass muster. We appreciate brands that put a little love into their product, and typically go with the brown stuff.  Enter Caskers – which introduces you to unique, small-batch spirits that are not available at your local liquor store. They offer these rare spirits in limited quantities for a limited time (think Gilt-model), but the gifting jewel here are the Caskers Clubs, which are subscriptions to curated alcoholic goodies. Get that man in your life a yearly subscription, and “conveniently” drop by after each shipment to help him enjoy his gift.

3. Gift Card from Black Lapel (www.blacklapel.com) – $50+

Black Lapel

You’ve seen the name, as we’ve pimped them out in past posts. Why the repeated love? Because it’s not often you can garner a suit that looks like it cost $1,500 for just $449. By skipping the middle men, and foregoing a retail space (and the traveling salesmen some companies use), they can pass savings onto you, the customer. We’ve personally tested the goods, and one of their suits or blazers would make a great addition to any dapper gent’s wardrobe. Any he’ll enjoy the process of creating his one-of-a-kind piece. Gift cards available in any denomination over $50, and can come as a physical card or e-gift.

Bonus: Get a complimentary Gold Membership to FreshNeck with the purchase of any BL suit.

4. “The Hangover” Trilogy (Amazon) – $52.18

Hangover Trilogy

This one needs little explanation. Though they seemed to get worse and worse as the sequels piled on, perhaps there is no better way to unwind and appreciate the normalcy in your life than spending 6 hours with The Wolfpack. It seems that every crew has a Phil, Stu, Doug, and Alan, but few can replicate the amazingness that is Leslie Chow.

5. Leather Beer Holster from Walnut Studio (Etsy) – $89

Walnut Studio Leather Beer Holster

Okay, so we like our liquor around here; who doesn’t like to kick back and throw down a couple of cold ones? But the dapper gentleman can’t be walking into a party (or even his own home) with a cardboard carton full of Bud Light. He prefers something a bit more artisinal, and should carry his booze around in style. Handmade in Oregon from leather and masonite, this carrying case is sturdy, reusable, and fashionable. It weighs just 10 oz empty, comes in three colors, and can be monogrammed!

6. Beard Wash from Beard Buddy (www.beardbuddy.com) – $24

Beard Buddy Beard Wash

Beards are officially “cool.” In fact, studies have found that men with beards look tougher, more aggressive and masculine and would make better romantic partners. That being said, your bear should be seen, not smelled. Keep it “fresh” with this organic wash containing aloe.

7. Skull Ice Cube Mold (GamaGo) – $12.00

LA1203-2T

We’re beginning to feel like alcoholics. Maybe we’ve been watching too much Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. But we’re not ashamed to proclaim, like Ron Burgundy, “I Love Scotch. Scotchy Scotch Scotch.” And if you like to imbibe the single malt like we do, then you should be doing it the proper way – with a single cube skull of ice. Not only will your onlookers thing you’re a badass, but the large surface area of the ice will keep your liquor cold, but not watered down. At this price, get a few for yourself as well.

8. A Puppy (www.perfectpetmatch.com) – Hugs and a Donation

Perfect Pet Match

A lifelong companion. Unconditional love. Chick magnet. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving. Obviously this isn’t for everyone (or is it?), but for the right person, you can play a part in changing their life forever, while at the same time saving an animal in need. The Humane Society estimates 6-8 million dogs and cats go through shelters every year, and that over 3 million are euthanized. A new company, PerfectPetMatch, is attempting to disrupt the industry by playing matchmaker between adopters, shelters, and the animals. Perhaps you’ll have the next Menswear Dog on your hands?

9. Touchscreen Gloves from Glove.ly (www.glove.ly) – $25+

Glove.ly

It’s getting cold, so we are all ready with our gloves and scarves. In the past, however, we were forced to risk frostbite on our fingers if we wanted to use our technology. Well these days, no self-respecting dapper gent can go too long without a selfie, so the cool cats at Glove.ly created an affordable, simple, and comfortable high-tech glove that allows you to use your touchscreen without removing the gloves or fingers. Bonus: magnets cleverly hidden under the logo keep your gloves together when you’re not wearing them so you can stop leaving them in taxis. They come in a variety of materials (including leather) and colors for both men and women.

10. Membership to Eleven James (www.elevenjames.com) – $249/month

elevenjames

Clearly at FreshNeck we’re all about collaborative consumption, sharing, and rentals. And we’ve often heard from our members asking why we don’t leverage our model for watches. Enter Eleven James, offering 2-month watch rentals from their awesome collection of Panerai, Rolex, Hublot, and more. They just launched, so we don’t have all of the details, but we’re pretty excited. Perhaps a collaboration is in the cards…

GQ (November) Cliff Notes – 10 Takeaways

Since 1958, Gentlemen’s Quarterly has been the Style Bible for men (Re-branded as GQ in 1967). The cover has been adorned by a who’s who of style and culture, including Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, JFK, Denzel Washington, and Paul Newman. Tom Cruise has covered the mag 7 times. Though a men’s style magazine, pretty ladies are no strangers to the cover, from Barbara Streisand and Julia Roberts to Jennifer Aniston to Tyra Banks. See the entire Cover Portfolio here.

Beyond the cover one can find a plethora of style inspiration, and interesting stories.  But herein can lie the problem. Coming in at over 200 pages per issue, combing through it all (and retaining something) can be a daunting task.  Not to mention the ads (the most recent issue boasts its first article on page 69). So we’re here to help, in a new monthly installment called GQ Cliff Notes. We will scour the mag in all its glory, and give you a condensed list of 10 takeaways, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

November 2013 (Michael Fassbender):

1. Green is the color of the season. Think dark (Hunter or Emerald) to make your neutral grays, whites, and blacks pop.

1382541230648_green-style-012. Tie Bars are the accessory of the moment (We’ve been telling you this for months. Maybe you’ll listen now that GQ is telling you the same thing). It’s a quick and affordable way to step up your Suit and Tie game.

3. Its a lot easier than you realize to hire a hitman. And a lot less expensive. But be careful, apparently the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives employs an army of undercovers.

4. Tom Ford can turn just about any bloke into the best looking man in the room. (All it takes is a complete makeover that would cost a few grand). And he refuses to button the top 3 buttons of any shirt.

1382548907637_project-upgrade-tom-ford-edition-gq-magazine-november-2013-style-02

5. The Oscars may get racially flipped this year, with no less than 5 worthy African-Americans worthy of the statue. (Michael B Jordan in Fruitvale Station, Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave, Idris Elba in Mandela, Isaiah Washington in Blue Caprice, and Forest Whitaker in Lee Daniels’ The Butler)

6. Harrison Ford is a cranky old man. So is Keith Olbermann.

7. Adele Exarchopoulos is a smokeshow (She’s the star of “Blue is the Warmest Color,” a French movie with a 10-minute lesbian scene).

1382375458263_adele-exarchopoulos-gq-magazine-november-2013-women-01

8. But she still doesn’t hold a candle to Emily Ratajkowski (of “Blurred Lines” fame).

1381785544682_emily-ratajkowski-gq-magazine-november-2013-women-01

9. Quitting your job and being a SAHD (Stay At Home Dad) actually seems like a decent way to go.

10. Michael Fassbender is way cooler than you. Heck, he’s probably already been with #s 7 and 8 above.

Unknown-3
So there you have it. Everything you need to know from the latest edition of GQ. And you didn’t even have to pretend to not see all those cardboard subscription slips fall onto the floor.

Your Own Personal Stylist

Stylist

FreshNeck currently carries over 1500 unique items in its Collection, including ties, bow ties, pocket squares, cufflinks, and more. While it’s nice that you can find pretty much anything you’re looking (pink rhinoceroses, anybody?) , some men can’t handle this kind of information overload.

Well, today FreshNeck is launching it’s Personal Stylist program, where you can interact with a style expert to put the perfect outfit together.  Just shoot us an email at stylist@freshneck.com with as much information as possible.  Let us know what occasion your dressing for, what you had in mind, and anything else about you that may be relevant, such as height and weight.  Including images of the rest of your outfit always helps.

And don’t worry, our advice is not just limited to our products, but anything menswear related!

Step-Up to Seven-Fold Ties

7 FOLD TIES-2

Grass-fed Beef.  180 thread-count sheets. Fully canvassed blazers. Slow churned ice-cream.  Steel-cut oats. All cost more, and represent the highest quality of their type, but many don’t even know what separates them from the ordinary.

Enter Seven-Fold Ties, an historic symbol of luxury.  It’s been called the Rolls Royce of neckwear.  But why?  Is a seven-fold tie really a “better” tie?  The answer – Yes. And here’s why:

What Is A 7-Fold Tie?

The term 7-fold refers to how the necktie is constructed.  Instead of sewing an inlay into the tie for thickness, the tie is made unlined out of a single piece of fabric (generally silk) that is folded 7 times.

So What?

While it is true that an onlooker cannot visibly decipher a 7-fold from a traditional 3-fold, the wearer can feel the difference, as a true 7-fold gives a thicker feel, incomparable drape, a larger looking tie knot, and a more hefty weight. It is generally thought that the added heft and vertical folds of the silk prevents twisting.

There is a reason most true 7-folds will run you $150-$300. It will take a full square meter of silk to craft one tie, along with many careful man-hours.

7-Fold Tips

– Like any other high-quality item, take care of your 7-fold ties, as they can last a lifetime.  This means carefully undoing the knot after a days use, and hanging it on a proper tie rack or rolling it for storage.

– Stick with a standard four-in-hand knot.  The added silk will already make a prominent knot, and using a 7-fold for a Windsor will make a huge knot suitable only for Italians or rappers married to Beyonce.

Feel The Difference

At FreshNeck, we strive to offer the best of the best, including 7-fold ties from a range of designers. Check out our selections from Sette (“Seven” in Italian), Kiton, Isaia, and others.

The entire 7-fold Collection can be found here.

The British Are Coming!

Duchamp

In an ongoing effort to provide our members with the biggest, boldest, and baddest ties out there, we are proud to announce the addition of Duchamp to our Collection.

Named after the French surreal artist Marcel Duchamp, the British brand is celebrating its 24th anniversary in 2013.  With a network of small, family owned mill and manufacturers in the UK, they offer a full range of menswear, from dapper suits, blazers, waistcoats and shirts, to accessories like ties, bow ties, cufflinks, belts, and bags.

Sold in high-end retailers such as Barney’s, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s (for $140), a Duchamp tie is often recognizable without even seeing a label.  Crafted from the finest silk, Duchamp ties often use vivid and bold colors and patterns.

Fashion and Music

From Jay-Z to Justin Timberlake, some of 2013’s greatest hits are mentioning designers and fashion trends in their tracks. With the release of “Magna Carta/Holy Grail”, Jay-Z’s latest album, designer Tom Ford not only get’s his named dropped in the chorus, but the rapper even dedicates an entire song to the fashion icon, titled “Tom Ford”.

The union between the rapper and designer seems just right. A top tier music mogul and one of the biggest names in fashion is bound to make a statement.

In the chorus, Jay-Z is rapping, “I don’t pop Molly/ I rock Tom Ford.” It seems that Ford’s pieces are Jay-Z’s drug of choice. What designer gets you “high?”

Jay-Z is not the only one dedicating his tunes to the men’s fashion world.

Justin Timberlake made his musical comeback with fashion in mind. Bringing sexy-back after a six year hiatus, his track “Suit & Tie” off his “The 20/20 Experience” album proves Timberlake is a fashion guy too. Ironically featuring Jay-Z rocking Tom Ford in the video from head to toe, this collaboration has been a huge success. The track is inspired by retro soul legends and infused with modern sound. Not only was “Suit & Tie” a number one hit but the Jay-Z and Timberlake are currently collaborating in the “Legends of the Summer” tour.
