Step-Up to Seven-Fold Ties

7 FOLD TIES-2

Grass-fed Beef.  180 thread-count sheets. Fully canvassed blazers. Slow churned ice-cream.  Steel-cut oats. All cost more, and represent the highest quality of their type, but many don’t even know what separates them from the ordinary.

Enter Seven-Fold Ties, an historic symbol of luxury.  It’s been called the Rolls Royce of neckwear.  But why?  Is a seven-fold tie really a “better” tie?  The answer – Yes. And here’s why:

What Is A 7-Fold Tie?

The term 7-fold refers to how the necktie is constructed.  Instead of sewing an inlay into the tie for thickness, the tie is made unlined out of a single piece of fabric (generally silk) that is folded 7 times.

So What?

While it is true that an onlooker cannot visibly decipher a 7-fold from a traditional 3-fold, the wearer can feel the difference, as a true 7-fold gives a thicker feel, incomparable drape, a larger looking tie knot, and a more hefty weight. It is generally thought that the added heft and vertical folds of the silk prevents twisting.

There is a reason most true 7-folds will run you $150-$300. It will take a full square meter of silk to craft one tie, along with many careful man-hours.

7-Fold Tips

– Like any other high-quality item, take care of your 7-fold ties, as they can last a lifetime.  This means carefully undoing the knot after a days use, and hanging it on a proper tie rack or rolling it for storage.

– Stick with a standard four-in-hand knot.  The added silk will already make a prominent knot, and using a 7-fold for a Windsor will make a huge knot suitable only for Italians or rappers married to Beyonce.

Feel The Difference

At FreshNeck, we strive to offer the best of the best, including 7-fold ties from a range of designers. Check out our selections from Sette (“Seven” in Italian), Kiton, Isaia, and others.

The British Are Coming!

Duchamp

In an ongoing effort to provide our members with the biggest, boldest, and baddest ties out there, we are proud to announce the addition of Duchamp to our Collection.

Named after the French surreal artist Marcel Duchamp, the British brand is celebrating its 24th anniversary in 2013.  With a network of small, family owned mill and manufacturers in the UK, they offer a full range of menswear, from dapper suits, blazers, waistcoats and shirts, to accessories like ties, bow ties, cufflinks, belts, and bags.

Sold in high-end retailers such as Barney’s, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s (for $140), a Duchamp tie is often recognizable without even seeing a label.  Crafted from the finest silk, Duchamp ties often use vivid and bold colors and patterns.

In case you haven’t gotten the memo, 2013 has been all about embracing your #NewCasual game. In the past, dressing down was the way to stand out from the sheep and declare your individuality.  But the scales have tilted, and it is time to add a dash of class to your casual wardrobe.  With a variety of designers and collections to choose from, Everett is an emerging brand to look out for.

After working with Everett at the Dapper Man Shop and enjoying their company at the Dapper Derby Party, this handcrafted brand deserves the proper recognition.

Everett co-founder Tinoy shows how to rock a tie with swag.

Founded by friends Nathan Coleman, James Brooks and Tinoy Kashif, Everett is about the idea of “wearing yourself”. Built upon this motto, Everett strives to remind people that what you wear is an expression of yourself. “There will always be restrictions, but there will always be an exception. Find that exception.”

Not your grandfather’s bow ties. Unless your grandfather was the coolest SOB around.

With #NewCasual gaining traction around the country, we asked our friends at Everett where they see fashion heading in the next five years. For them, “More and more men are learning that dressing well is a privilege and the days of having difficulty finding accessorizing options are over.” Even so, Everett believes that men’s accessories will continue to focus on subtle accents and decorative details to allow wearers to make a statement.

A Tie for Any Occasion

Neckwear can provide the ability for any man to elevate his appearance whether that’s to his boss, his friends or even his future wife. However, not just any tie will do. With today’s wide variety of menswear, it’s easy to tailor your style towards any event or circumstance you may find yourself in.

OFFICE

The office is all about showing off your confidence – without appearing arrogant. On your climb to the corner office, wear striped patterns while keeping in mind the power colors such as gold, blue and black when putting together your look. Stick with traditional silk and nothing slimmer than 3 inches.  Bring it all together with a tie bar.

Get noticed for all the right reasons at your next brunch, day party or stroll around town. For a casual look, throw on a loosely knotted tie and roll up those sleeves to your collared shirt.  If you’re committed to fashion like us, think about skinny ties in solid colors and prints in non-traditional fabrics like linen and cotton.

Hope you guys enjoyed your weekend! For those of you who missed it, last week was an exciting time for FreshNeck as we had our first trial with a pop-up shop here in Manhattan. Here is a quick recap of the week’s events and the goals we wanted to accomplish by opening a pop-up shop.

What is The Dapper Man Shop?

From June 4th to June 9th, FreshNeck teamed up with four other online start-up companies, Black Lapel, The Collaterals, Everett, and Pengallan; to open a pop-up shop in SoHo. Inspired by the recent “experience shops” by the likes of Bonobos and Warby Parker, The Dapper Man Shop was a place for the modern man to kick back, enjoy himself, and learn about some kick-ass fashion startups.way to promote our product by giving our customers a traditional shopping experience.  The art-gallery-turned-man-cave featured leather couches, dressers stocked with sick duds, and of course, flowing whiskey.

Although our company has its roots on the internet, we refuse to lose the personal touch and customer engagement.  Face-to-face. Man-to-man. Our members are so important to us, and their feedback is what has helped us build the company.  ,

A little more about the other particpating companies, each doing awesome things in their own right.

Black Lapel – custom shirts and suits for the discerning and fashionable man. I personally own one, and it rocks. And is beyond affordable.

The Collaterals – luxurious yet practical cufflinks and collar links for the modern man. Wore them to a wedding this past week. They look badass, and are practical, too.

Everett Clothing – locally handcrafted neckties, bowties, and pocket squares for men. We carry the line, and are big supporters. Great product, great people behind the company.

Pengallan, luxury slim-fit boxers and other accessories for the stylized individual. Buy two. Your girlfriend will steal one. Guaranteed.

Highlights:

It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and you’ve fancied yourself a stroll in SoHo for some summer shopping. As you turn the corner onto Broome Street, your curiosity is peaked when you notice the lemonade stand, along with two rakish gents smoking cigars on the sidewalk.  You are then personally invited, and escorted into, the Dapper Man Shop. Upon entry, a barista offers you a refreshing beverage before you take a seat on a vintage leather sofa to take in the atmosphere. As you do so, you are kindly greeted by an exceptionally well-dressed man, who invites you to explore the worlds of the participating companies. Shopping the way a man wants – while sitting on a leather couch drinking a single-malt.

While the Shop was run as a retail/experience shop by day, the space was turned into an event space by night for some awesome industry parties.  Like Pengallan’s Launch Party (it’s hard to be the best-looking guy in the room when Tyson Beckford stops by). Or Saturday evening’s Dapper Man Shop Main Event, hosted by Stoli.

A Thursday evening meet-and-greet was hosted by Damien Basile, a local blogger and designer of custom bow ties and pocket squares (check out his exclusive collection for FreshNeck). The event was sponsored by Ploonky.com and 320NY.com, and the attendees were treated to complimentary whiskey and a unique elector-swing set put on by Electric Gentleman.  The evening concluded with a bow tie-tying contest, with winners taking home bow ties from Everett.

Now that the week is over, and we have some time to reflect, we couldn’t be happier with the experience. We also wanted to send a special thank you to the founders of the other companies. You helped make the Dapper Man Shop a resounding success.

Stay Fresh.

Case Study: Kevin (Part 1)

FreshNeck Before and After Case Study

Since the inception of FreshNeck we’ve received some great feedback from members. We love to read these “success stories” and show our love by throwing a few freebees their way. We’ve noticed that the most genuine advocates are FreshNeck members themselves. Every Friday we’ll publish an excerpt from Kevin’s (seen above) account with FreshNeck to provide an insight on the magic of FreshNeck.

“I Guess You’re Just What I Needed”
For my senior superlatives I won “most likely to become a millionaire” and was nominated to “be the first to get married” (the combination of the two still makes me laugh.) But the most coveted superlative has always been “best dressed.” Not that I expected to win, but I had more interest in my appearance then I probably showed.

For my 26th birthday a friend of mine bought me a platinum membership to FreshNeck. She’s always liked the way I dressed but felt I could step it up a little. Knowing the stubborn guy I was she knew I wasn’t going to buy a new wardrobe, so she started small. I’ll admit, I haven’t worn a tie in years but from GQ to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon the tie has certainly become a customary piece to everyday men’s fashion.

“It Feels Like The First Time”
Not wasting anytime I logged in and filled my queue with twenty-five ties. I was able to click and drag each item to place them in the order I wanted them delivered. I had some plans coming up that I wanted to wear a tie for so I chose my first four ties accordingly. I was most excited for the knitted John Varvatos tie that I would wear for my friends’ bachelor party. I also placed a black Emporio Armani tie at the top of my queue intended for an award ceremony at work. I was told to expect my order in 3 business days so my anticipation was now a short waiting game. Until I received my first order I had two questions:

Could something as simple as a tie change the game?
And
Was FreshNeck the answer?

“Somebody’s Watching Me”
I received my order on a Thursday so wore a tie to work the next day. I stayed with my typical Friday style of jeans and a button down but added some flare with a red knitted tie from Brooks Brothers. I certainly received looks that said “I know something’s different about you but I can’t put my finger on it.” That day I went out to lunch and a colleague commented on my tie. He liked that it was knitted because it was more casual then a traditional silk tie. When I got back to work my boss asked me if I was redefining casual Fridays. I laughed and told her that ties on casual Friday may become “my thing.”

The #NewCasual

#NewCasual - Leather on Leather

#NewCasual – Leather on Leather

We’ve mentioned before that ties are not just for the office.  (Find that blog post here). But it’s time to take this to the next level.  So we here at FreshNeck are officially starting our new campaign, #NewCasual. The name speaks for itself. You already have your businesswear down. Your suit game is in its prime, your wingtips are shined, and you are confidently rocking those fine Brioni, Hermes, Gucci, and Prada silk ties.

But do you live to work, or work to live?  Don’t neglect your style when you’re out on the town, whether with your friends, your family, or a member of the fairer sex. Just as you’re shooting for that promotion at work, it’s time to earn your promotion at life. So show ‘em what’s up, and tie one on.  It’s the #NewCasual.

Before you think that the trendsetters aren’t already embracing this, here is some inspiration.

Swizz Beatz - bow tie and colorful sweater

David Beckam - tie, dark printed shirt, cardigan, jeans

Dwyane Wade – tie, sweater, leather jacket, sunglasses

JT - loosened tie, vest, rolled sleeves, thick-rimmed glasses

So now you know.  Rock stars wear ties and Athletes wear ties.  It’s the #NewCasual.  So leave that 3.5″ silk beauty in your office desk drawer, and grab one of these bad boys for your next night out.

And when you’re out at that party and you photobomb Timberlake, hashtag it with #newcasual.

A Custom Suit For Everyone

Never Buy Off-The-Rack Again

You’ve probably heard your friends or co-workers talk about their new custom suit.  Seems everyone and their mother “knows a guy.”  The days of the one-percenters enjoying exclusivity in the bespoke world are over, thanks to modernized, and affordable, options.  However, tread carefully – just because something is “custom” does not guarantee high quality.  Here, we give you three options at various price-points, all FreshNeck-approved.

BLACK LAPEL ($) (www.blacklapel.com)

BlackLapelLogo

Who would have ever dreamed you could get a personalized, custom suit for under $450 (or shirt under $100)? How does the company even afford to pay its rent?  Well, the answer is in the question – there’s no store or showroom, and the savings get passed on to you.  They make you work for it, however, as you have to measure yourself (they provide a video guide, and with a friend’s help, 15 minutes is all it takes).  With your measurements uploaded to the system, you can design your suit online, where they offer 18 different suit fabrics and styles, plus 2 tux options.  Three weeks later and your one-of-a-kind suit arrives at your door.  And just in case your measuring skills weren’t up to par, they offer a complimentary $75 alterations credit. Once you nail the process down, re-ordering new styles from your couch is the real value-add.

Bonus Tip: If you are in New York, make an appointment to go to their office and get fitted by the pros.

ALABASTER & CHESS ($) (www.alabasterchess.com)

Alabaster & Chess Logo

So maybe you’ve dabbled in the bespoke world.  Perhaps you met a Hong-Kong tailor that rented out a Sheraton for a week, took your measurements, and mailed you a suit.  It was certainly better than going to JoS. A. Bank for a “Buy one suit get 6 free plus an ice cream cone.” Now you’re ready for the real deal, but still don’t want to break the bank.  Make an appointment with Eli over at A&C. See him either at his uptown office, his Union Square Tailor, or he’ll come to your home or office.  Every detail, from fabric, to stitching, to a contrasting inside cuff, is made to your specs. Your co-worker will think you dropped two grand, when in reality, suits start at $399 and shirts at $89.  They make a mean shirt as well.

Bonus Tip: Tell ‘em FreshNeck sent you, and get 10% off your first order.

MICHAEL ANDREWS BESPOKE ($$$) (www.michaelandrewsbespoke.com)

Michael Andrews Bespoke Logo

First off, this is their showroom on Great Jones Street. Yeah, that’s a 12-foot Oak Bar, serving your favorite single malts, gratis.  It looks like the type of joint you’d expect to run into Frank Sinatra (you probably won’t). The place oozes with inspiration, from the mannequins, to the gq-worthy Senior Stylists.  And having a seemingly never-ending supply of gorgeous (and helpful) ladies on hand never hurts.

You’ll sit down at one of the marble high-tops with your personal style consultant.  Don’t fret if you’re ill-prepared, and don’t know your peak lapels from your shawl collars.  The staff is beyond knowledgeable, and will guide you in making your vision a reality.  As if impeccable service was not enough, the quality of the fabrics, as well as the craftsmanship, is second-to-none.  While this will set you back somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500, depending on fabric, that’s not too bad when amortized over the next ten years that it will be the go-to-suit in your closet.

Stay Tuned for Part 2 next week, on how to prepare for your trip to the Custom Tailor.

In the meantime, don’t forget to sign up at freshneck.com, to get some fresh ties and accessories to pair with your fresh new suit.
